The family of a missing member of the National Youths Service Corps posted to Akwa Ibom State identified as Akeem Adekunle has expressed worry over his whereabouts which has remained unknown for over six weeks.

It was learnt that the family became anxious when Adekunle’s phone was not reachable days after he left Lagos for Akwa Ibom where he was deployed in for the NYSC scheme.

Adekunle’s elder sister, Kudirat, was on the verge of tears when she spoke to newsmen on Friday. She said her missing brother came to Lagos for the last Eid-el-Fitri celebration in July.

According to her, she spoke with him many times on the phone while he was in Lagos before some of his friends came to tell her that his line was not reachable a few days after he should have returned to Akwa Ibom.

Kudirat said, ‘‘He stayed in a place not too far from my residence on the Island when he came home from Akwa Ibom. We used to talk on the telephone. It was on July 25 that some of his friends came to tell me that they could not reach him on the telephone. That was when we started looking for him and contacted the officials where he was serving.’’

She added that some people started calling her with a hidden number in August to say Adekunle was on the campus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and that she should stop worrying about his whereabouts.

‘‘I was preparing to go to the polytechnic when someone told me that the school was not in session. I have been distressed and wondering why my brother would abandon his NYSC scheme and return to his alma mater,” she added.

The missing corps member’s place of primary assignment was Itam Secondary School in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Calls to Adekunle’s mobile number (08024394665), observed that the calls were forwarded to another number and not connecting.

The state Coordinator of NYSC in Akwa Ibom State, Ngozi Chukwuka, said the agency was aware of the development.
