Nigeria has dropped by two places on the World Rugby rankings, as Japan and Argentina have move up the table, according to the World Rugby Federation report. The report obtained by pressmen on Thursday in Lagos said that the country which ranked as 73 before had dropped to the 75th position.

According to the report, this was after the Rugby World Cup held from Sept.18 to Oct.31 in England. It said that Japan and Argentina were the biggest climbers in the World Rugby rankings after grabbing the headlines at the World Cup. The report also stated that Japan, the 2019 World Cup hosts, climbed three places to occupy the 10th position.

“Argentina jumped from the eighth position to the fifth position after they reached the semi-finals at the World Cup. “The host, England, has dropped four places down to the eighth position , their equal worst position since the rankings began in 200,’’ it said.

In his reaction to the development, Olatunji Fasimoye, the Technical Director, Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) told newsmen that the body would work toward moving up the table. “We will try our best to ensure we move higher on the table, I am not pleased with the decline,” he said.

Fasimoye said that one major reason for the drop was the country’s inability to qualify from Cup 1c to Cup 1b. “The movement was due to our inability to cross from 1c to 1b, but I pray that with luck, commitment and hard work, we will move up the ladder very soon,” he said.
