Shoot civilians, go to jail – IGP warns Nigerian policemen
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase has stated that the era of shooting civilians by the policemen without adequate punishment by the law is over, noting that, any officer who shoots unarmed civilian in the country henceforth will be jailed.
He also warned Commissioners of Police to stop sending officers with psychological problems on assignment, adding that, officers especially, those in convoys, should stop using horsewhips and canes on Nigerians.
Arase gave the order on Thursday while addressing police officers from various rank and file at the State Police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The police boss further disclosed that any erring officer should be arraigned in court within 48 hours of his/her arrest.
“Nigerians are not animals, don’t beat civilians with horse whips, especially the officers on the governor’s convoy. Any police officer that shoots a civilian must be arraigned in court within 48 hours because you’re not allowed to shoot a civilian,” Arase said.
He further said that the ‘Spy Police’ attached to banks should stop using police uniform from the first day of January, 2016 or risk being arrested and detained by the police.
The Inspector General of Police, arrived the state yesterday to monitor the level of preparation in place ahead of a befitting burial for the matriarch of Awolowo dynasty, Mama Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, who will be buried next Wednesday in Ikenne, Ogun state.
Arase, as part of his determination to boost the morale of officers and commend professionalism, promoted eight Sentry Guards of the Command for impressive performance during the inspection of guards of honour.
Those promoted are: Haruna Ijiji, Tochukwu Igwe, Friday Momodu, Faruna Danjuma, Felix Adejoh, Mathew Adelu, Usip Uwemedimo and Emmanuel Unazi.
The IGP also announced personal scholarship to 12 primary school students of Police Children’s School, Eleweran, Abeokuta, who welcomed him to the command.
Arase, while announcing the welfare package of his administration, disclosed that arrangement had been concluded to construct 25,000 post retirement housing estate for ranks and files across the country.
The IGP however directed the State Commissioner of Police, CP Abdulmajid Ali to, as a matter of urgency, look for a suitable land with title documents for the housing estate in Ogun.
“36,000 officers have benefited from promotional courses while others with additional qualifications would also be considered,” he promised.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Commissioner requested for six additional area commands in the state.
Ali also revealed that the command is in dire need of additional manpower to be able to match the increasing security challenges in the state.
