The Yoruba Youths Congress (YYC) has demanded that the clamour for restructuring of the country should be stopped forthwith across the nation, stressing that it is unripe and ill-timed for national discourse.
The group said the National Assembly can legislate on certain issues, especially, resource control to favor the state governments.
YYC said those yearning for regional government as a form of restructuring do not have the best interest of the nation at heart.
National leader of the group, Wale Alake who addressed journalists in Akure, the state capital said there are more fundamental and basic issues that needed to be addressed urgently before the ideal of restructuring can be conceived.
Alake noted that there is need to restructure the minds of our leaders across the country, such that the nation could have nationalists and selfless leaders as against regionalism and self – centered leaders.
He said instead of conceiving the ideal of regionalism, there can be a referendum in the nation on some parts of the constitution to be amended to address economic restructuring.
The YYC national leadership said institutions must also be built and strengthened so as to be alive to their responsibilities and deliver on their mandates.
“We believe that there is no challenge we face as a nation presently that cannot be overcome if various institutions of government are strengthened to work at optimum level
“Advocates of restructuring complain of marginalization in government appointments in various government agencies, there’s an agency of government to take care of such if it were alive to it’s responsibilities, such lopsidedness would have been corrected
”If the code of conduct bureau were alive to its responsibilities corruption would have been made unattractive and EFCC would have had lesser jobs to do “YYC noted.
The group accused some elites and the ruling class of being behind the clamour for restructuring, saying it is not for the benefits of the masses.
“The loudest advocate of restructuring are the manipulative elites and ruling class who manipulate the narrative to suit their selfish and parochial interest
”I have not seen or heard any one of them elucidating on how restructuring would benefit the suffering masses who on a daily basis are confronted with various problems ranging from hunger to lack of basin needs of life
“This group of people go as far as cajoling the masses to take position that are even detrimental to their own wellbeing
“If Nigeria is restructured are we going to bring people from mars to run the structure? Isn’t it the same ruling class that has almost ‘knocked” the engine of the vehicle of this present structure that ll hold sway at the regional level?
The group said if the agitations for restructuring is not curtailed it might led to unconscious gravitation towards secession.
It said the National Assembly is in the best position to address any issue of socio-economic, political and any seemingly structural imbalances and expectations.
“There is a government in place in the country that should be assisted and encouraged to tackle pressing challenges rather than being stampeded into making hasty and irrational decisions ” YYC concluded.
Other leaders of the YYC at the Press conference included, the National President, Prince Dapo Adepoju, Mr. Awobodede, Deputy National President, Comrade Dayo Joseph, Comrade Olakunle Ogunleye and representatives of Students Union leaders across the South West.
