A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old man, Benjamin Bernard, to four years imprisonment for conspiracy and stealing.


The convict is said to have conspired with one Emmanuel Nkasi, now at large, to break into a building located at 25 Ikwerre Road, Mile on Diobu, Port Harcourt. and stole property worth N126,000 and sold it for N26,000.


The offence is punishable under the section of the Criminal Code Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.


Chief Magistrate, Felicitas Amanze in her judgment convicted Bernard to one-year imprisonment on count one which borders on conspiracy, and three years on count two which borders on stealing.


Amanze held that the court was lenient enough to sentence the accused to four years instead of 10 years for not wasting the time of the court by pleading guilty to the charges.


Similarly, a magistrate court in Port Harcourt has remanded 41-year-old Ibezhim Daniel to the correctional center for the murder of his cousin, Ekene Jonathan.


According to the charges, Daniel, in an incident that occurred on the 20th of August, 2021, at Ihu-Bush, Ihuakpa community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, is alleged to have cut late Jonathan severally to death with a machete on a farm over a land-related matter.


Amanze, in her ruling, said the court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case.


She adjourned till the 3rd of February, 2022 while waiting for legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.
