The headquarters of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited in Marina, Lagos Island area of Lagos State, went up in flames on Tuesday, destroying some property.

It was  learnt that the fire, which began around 6pm, started after a live cable fell on a combustible material.


As of the time of filing this report, firefighters from the Sari Iganmu and Onikan stations of the Lagos State Fire Service were said to have been deployed to the scene to combat the inferno.

It was learnt that the last time fire gutted the building was in 1983.

An official of the fire service, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Tuesday fire began from the top floor of the skyscraper.

The Director of the state Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, who confirmed the incident through a text message, later explained that the fire was caused by en electrical current.

He said, “There were people in the building and for a long time, they had been using generator to power their appliances.

“But today (Tuesday), they invited the electricity distribution company to fix their electricity and it was done. They switched on their power and suddenly, a cable snapped and landed on a combustible material, which started the fire.”
