Plateau Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Linda Barau, has confirmed the outbreak of the bird flu otherwise known as the avian influenza in the state.

The commissioner said that four farms have already been affected, with thousands of birds already isolated.

Barau told newsmen that efforts are being intensified to ensure that the disease does not spread to other farms in the state.

She added that farmers have been advised to maintain a higher sense of bio security to avoid the spread of the disease.

The commissioner said that she had directed the director veterinary services to liaise with farmers, while advising them not to panic as the situation was under control.

She said, “It has been reported to us about the outbreak of avian influenza in the state. Already we have identified four farms and all the birds have been quarantined to avoid the spread of the disease.”

Barau added, “We have taken steps to ensure that it did not spread while advising farmers to maintain a high sense of bio security. All veterinary officers have been placed on high alert to avoid the possible spread of the disease to other farms.”
