Chelsea star Mikel Obi has donated $30,000 to the Nigeria Olympic team in Atlanta.
An excited player of the Olympic team told reporters: “Mikel has donated $30,000 to the team. You know we have not received money since we left Nigeria.”
Mikel has been named the captain of the 85-man Nigerian contingent to next month’s Rio Olympics.
On Wednesday, coach Samson Siasia fired a passionate plea for the authorities concerned to come to the rescue of the team financially, saying this was not the way for any team to prepare for a major competition.
He also claimed he has not been paid five months’ salaries.
An unnamed Nigerian based in Atlanta picked up the bills of the team for their first 10 days in the United States of America.
