Enyimba look set to play into the semi-finals of the Federation Cup after Rivers United abandoned their last eight fixture at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan on Thursday with the Peoples Elephant leading 1-0.

The Aba- based side were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute by the centre referee which Rivers United players prosted against and later walked out of the pitch, acting on orders from their officials.

Play was halted earlier on Wednesday following a heavy downpour which rendered the playing surface unplayable after 45 minutes of action.

Stephen Chukwude opened scoring three minutes after the restart, nodding home Joseph Osadiaye's cross.

Rivers United responded immediately and almost equalised through Onyekachi Okafor but his effort after a brilliant solo run was saved by Theophilus Afelokhai.

Afelokhai and his opposing counterpart Rotimi Sunday made good saves afterwards as both sides upped their performance.

But the game was brought to an abrupt end after Enyimba were awarded a penalty 15 minutes before the end following a foul on their striker inside the box.

Rivers United protested that their defender Ayodele Asekunlowo was fouled in the buildup to that action.

On Wednesday, Warri Wolves also abandoned their game against FC IfeanyiUbah, claiming two of their goals were wrongly disallowed by the centre referee.
