Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, has assured that the national team will qualify for the Russia 2018 World Cup, after the team’s 4-0 victory over Cameroon on Friday in Uyo.

He added that the players would do their best to ensure that they qualify for the next year’s World Cup in Russia.

China-based Odion Ighalo, Mikel, Victor Moses and Kelechi Ihinacho grabbed the goals that gave the Eagles a 12th win in 20 meetings against the Indomitable Lions.

“This team need experienced players and mentoring. I will make sure that we do our best by qualifying for both the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations. I believe if we do what we did today (Friday), we can beat any other teams,” he said at the post-match conference in Uyo.

Also, Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has dedicated the win to the team’s ailing goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July.

Rohr admitted that impressive goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa was not his first choice for the game. The German said he was happy that the IfeanyiUbah shot stopper performed brilliantly and beyond expectations on his competitive debut, adding that with the keeper’s fine form, Nigeria’s hope of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup was bright.

The German expressed satisfaction at the result of the Eagles’ game plan, which he said took the coaching crew six months to prepare.

“We have been planning for this game in the last six months. Before the match, we watched many videos and adhered to game plan. We need at least 11 points to qualify for the World Cup.

“I’m happy with the goalkeeper for his excellent saves. We know Kelechi Iheanacho hasn’t ed regularly in his club and I’m glad that he scored in today’s game,” Rohr stated.

Cameroon coach, Hugo Broos, said his team could still qualify for the World Cup if they win their remaining matches in Group B of the African qualifiers.

He, however, said his team played well especially in the first few minutes of the game. Broos noted that it was the Nigerian goals that destabilised his boys.
