Bernabeu Readies A Send Off For Totti
The Santiago Bernabeu is set to bid a farewell for the Roma Legend in tonight's Champions League encounter.
Totti made his debut at the famous home of Los Blancos way back in 1995 in a match paying tribute to former Real Legend Emilio Butragueno. Twenty years later, Totti is still turning out for his beloved Roma.
The former World Cup winner made his Champions League debut against Madrid on September 11, 2001, scoring his first goal in Europe's premier club competition on a night of football overshadowed by the despicable terrorist attacks on New York's Twin Towers earlier that day.
His first official appearance at the Bernabeu came the following month and ahead of that match, Totti admitted the trip to the Bernabeu represented something special.
"I always dreamed of playing here," he said. "As a boy I admired Real Madrid. They had footballers with a great mentality: Butragueno, Michel, [Manolo] Sanchis, Hugo Sanchez, [Bernd] Schuster... They were the fashionable footballers in Europe at the time. From then on I always liked this team."
